Modern Dental had an outdated data reporting solution based on Microsoft SQL Server and SSIS packages. Reports were generated daily using complex stored procedures, with little transparency into how KPIs were calculated. The existing setup was difficult to maintain, lacked stakeholder trust, and wasn’t suitable for scaling across countries.

Their comprehensive product portfolio includes fixed prosthetic devices like crowns and bridges, removable devices such as dentures, and other solutions including orthodontic devices, clear aligners, sports guards, and anti-snoring devices. MDE operates subsidiaries in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the UK, and Sweden, with a team of approximately 700 employees.

The Solution
Crystalloids partnered with Modern Dental to lay the groundwork for a scalable, cloud-native data platform. Key components of the solution included:
- Google Cloud Foundation with Terraform: Using infrastructure-as-code, we deployed a GCP environment that included role-based access control and automated user provisioning across both test and production environments.
- Real-time Data Replication with Datastream: We used Datastream to replicate data in near real-time from their on-premise Microsoft SQL Server to BigQuery. From there, transformations were applied using SQL views, preparing the data for reporting in Looker Studio.
- Looker Studio Reporting: Connecting Looker directly to BigQuery, we enabled Modern Dental to generate real-time dashboards for sales, operations, and finance. These dashboards provide clear, trustworthy insights for better decision-making.
- Automation & Efficiency: By leveraging Terraform scripts, changes to environments, such as permissions, user groups, and infrastructure updates, were rolled out efficiently and consistently.
